WLD Ranch Trip, Oct. '08
What did you do this weekend? by
Maureen (Troop leader)
Ten junior scouts from Mercer
Troop 30834 and their leaders learned all about cowboy life this
weekend at the WLD Ranch near Erie, PA.
When the scouts weren't grooming, riding or learning about horses they
were building their confidence on the rifle and archery ranges.
They
even tried their hands at throwing tomahawks! (Who says sharp and
dangerous things are just for Boy Scouts?) Also
included in the trip was a hay ride, a wagon ride pulled with a team of
beautiful Belgian draft
horses and a chance to build their team work capabilities on the
low ropes course
and low rock wall. The scouts' favorite activity (besides being
with
the horses), was sending their troopmates sailing on a hanging cargo
net.

Cadette-Senior Singing Hills Trip, Oct. 4-5, 2008
by
Anna and Shannon, Cadette Girl Scouts, Troop 30609

We went to camp at Singing Hills this weekend and played the car game
"Coffee Pot" on the way there.
We ate supper then played team building games. Our favorite was
the Magic Carpet Game. We had dessert.
We went to bed and got up early-ish. We ate breakfast (we eat a
lot at camp) and had a Scout's Own.
We left to go to the rifle range and on the way there we explored the
handicap accessible platform tent unit
and climbed a tree. At the rifle range we shot 22 caliber single
bolt action rifles from the prone position.
Everyone did pretty well. Justin did really well! Candace
made a smiley face with her shots. After shooting
for two hours, we ate lunch then went back to the Rifle Range and shot
some more. We took a long, sweaty hike
and saw BEAR skat, animal bones and a hawk feather. We we got
back to the lodge, cleaned it up and got
stuck in traffic in Franklin on the way home. Some of us slept on
the way home and some just talked.
We should go back to Singing Hills again!

Junior Troop 834 Tours the
Vienna
Air Force Base and jumps
out the back of a C-130!
Oct. 20, 2008
by
Maureen (Troop leader)
Don't worry about consulting the Girl Scout Safety-Wise Manual-
no parachutes were needed for this adventure. Today Mercer
Junior
Girl Scout Troop 30834 had the pleasure of a personalized tour of the
US Air Force Reserve Base in Vienna, OH - thanks to one scout's
dad.
A big Girl Scout THANK YOU to Andrea's dad, USAF Reservist TSGT Gary
(Bryan) Masters, who gave the troop a look inside and out of these
magnificent aircrafts. Also included in the tour was a trip to
the
fire station and the Avionics Department. Thanks also to Bryan's
wife
Linda, who not only is one of the troop's assistant leaders, but
treated the troop to a pizza dinner in the Avionics shop. The
scouts
even had the pleasure of watching a plane practice landing and taking
off before they headed back home.
