Some
background on this trip:
Some
of the leaders from the Mercer Area Girl Scouts have
been attending the Girl Scout Day Pitt Women's Baskeball game as a
leader-daughter event for several years. It is great to be at the
Peterson Events Center with so many other Girl Scouts watching two of
the best women's basketball teams in the country play a game.
Usually, we arrive a little early and go into Oakland for lunch, then
watch the game. This year I thought that it would be great to:
- not have
to drive to Pittsburgh, park, and worry about the weather in January -
let's leave all of this to a bus driver!
- make this
event available to other leaders and daughters because it is so much fun
and is very affordable, too -
leaders from any Service Area are welcome to attend!
- do
something before lunch as there are so many unique opportunities in
Oakland - if you haven't been to the Nationality Rooms
in the Cathedral
of Learning at Pitt, I'd
suggest this option for the morning. The tour guides do an
amazing job; you and your scout will feel as if you've personally
visited serveral foreign countries by the time the tour ends.
And, you can't beat the price: $1 for scouts, $3 for
adults. The other option for the morning activity is to attend an
IP program at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum.
I have not personally done this program, but have heard very good things about it
from other leaders that I have met from the Pittsburgh area. The
cost of the IP program is $10 per scout with no fee for leaders.
See the links section at the bottom of this page for more info on both
of these activities.
- Note:
All activities are about 6 blocks from each other so you will be doing
some walking to get from one activity to another - ie.

Peterson Events
Center. Map

I've been a Girl
Scout leader for 9 years and have planned many large events for our
Service Area, including two other bus trips, and have even planned a
few events for council (I was co-organizer of GSWPA Boot Camp 2008 and
2009), so you can feel confident that this event is
well planned. Please contact me if you have any questions!
